Gearless Cargo handling begins at the Freeport of Monrovia
APM Terminals Liberia is now (February 2024) receiving gearless vessels at the Freeport of Monrovia!
With the introduction of mobile harbor cranes and the recent dredging of the Port, we are now able to accommodate gearless and larger ships.
This marks a significant milestone for our Port and demonstrates our commitment to providing efficient and modernized services. Now, gearless container carriers can bring cargo directly to Liberia, allowing for seamless offloading by our state-of-the-art cranes.

Container ship.
A container ship is a cargo ship ,
that carries all of its load in truck-size intermodal containers.
Big size container vessels are normally gearless and the containers are loaded and discharged by in port gantry cranes. Such facilities are only established in the big ports of the world.
Most Container ships are medium and smaller size which has its own unloading crane.
Ultra Large Container Vessel (ULCV) are 450m and longer,
carry 24,000 and higher TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent unit) of containers.
about 90% of non-bulk cargo worldwide is transported by container,
modern container ships can carry over 24,000 TEU.
Container ships are distinguished into 7 major size categories:
small feeder, feeder, feeder max, Panamax, Post-Panamax,
New Panamax and ultra-large.
As per recent statistics, there were 161 container ships in the
VLCV class (Very Large Container Vessel),
and only 51 ports in the world can accommodate them.
Some of the container ships carry only refrigerated container. A reefer ship is a refrigerated cargo ship typically used to transport perishable cargo, which require temperature-controlled handling, such as fruits, meat, vegetables, dairy products, and similar items. Refrigerated container ships are specifically designed to carry containerised unit loads where each container has its individual refrigerated unit. These ships differ from conventional container ships in their design, power generation, and electrical distribution equipment. They need provisions made for powering each container's cooling system. Because of their ease of loading and unloading cargo many container ships are now being built or redesigned to carry refrigerated containers.
Because of the increasing demand in the market, increasing cargo-carrying capacity, increasing operating efficiency and improvement in environmental processes and operation of a container vessel in liner service, the container vessels have continuously become bigger.
The container carrying capacity of container ships today has increased more than 1200% compared to 1968. They have become more technologically advanced and fuel-efficient over time.
Basic Design Of Container Vessels
The design of the accompanying container vessel is decisive. The hull is akin to the conventional Bulk Carriers and General cargo ships built around a firm keel. The lower part of the vessel has a significant effect on the construction of the ship. There are lower decks, an Engine room, great ballast, and Fuel Tanks. The Cargo holds are the places where the underdeck Containers are loaded.
Inside the hold, cell guide arrangements guide the container to slot well. This helps the crane operator safely slide the container inside the handles and acts as a guide. It is imperative to maintain this cell guide well. Any damage to the cell guides may lead to critical consequences. These holds are topped by hatch covers, above which the containers are stacked.
Most modern container vessels do not have cranes, but some have cargo cranes installed on them, especially in vessels of smaller sizes. Vessels with cranes are called geared container vessels, whereas vessels without cranes are called Gearless container vessels.
Related Read: Understanding Design Of Container Ships
These geared container vessels use them for self-loading and discharging at ports where the cargo volume is low. There are also some specialized systems for securing the containers onboard.
In most container vessels, lift-away types of Hatch covers are used. Hatch covers to increase the ship’s carrying capacity and prevent water ingress inside the hold & fissure, the containers under-deck and on deck both. These hatch covers have cleats that must be closed after every cargo operation & before the vessel departs from any port.

Continuing the MD said that NPA is equal to the task, observing that what happened today, was a five day preparation for the arrival of this vessel from Cotonou, Benin Republic.
Giving details of the vessel which is the biggest ever Container Vessel to arrive at any Nigerian Ports, Maesrkline Port Captain kikelomo Abiola Cudjoe said the length of the vessel is 300 metres (length overall) and the Width is 48 metres and a total draught of 11.2 metres, while the vessel capacity stood at 9,971( TEUs ).
Receiving the vessel – ‘Maerskline Stardelhorn’ at the Federal Ocean Terminal (FOT), Onne along with some Onne Port Team, the Port Manager Alhasssan Ismaila Abubakar said the arrival of the vessel is a milestone attained by NPA.
He expressed appreciation to the Managing Director of NPA, Hadiza Bala Usman for all the support and assistance given to Onne port Complex in making the arrival of the vessel possible.
" I give kudos to NPA MD. She made this ‘Landmark/achievement today possible. This is the first time such a gigantic Container vessel is calling at any Nigerian ports’’, the Port Manager stated categorically.
The Port Manager added that the arrival of the vessel is a trial, observing that the port is well equipped with all facilities and equipment to receive the vessel.
The Port Manager informed that the vessel was brought in from Fairway Bouy Bonny by NPA’s three Pilots who are well trained on pilotage of such vessel.
"We deployed 3 TUG Boats with 3 Pilots from Onne Port Complex, and for us, the successful arrival of this vessel showcase the expertise of NPA’s Ports Operations ", the Port Manager stated.
Abubakar added that this development shows that presently NPA is fully equipped, noting that shippers in the Eastern Zone and those in the Northern axis will have option to make choices. He said that consumers in the Eastern and Northern axis will benefit as he congratulated NPA staff for a credible performance on safe arrival of the vessel.
Also speaking at the event, the Country Manager of A P Molleer klaos Holman Laursen said, this is the biggest Container vessel to call in Nigerian Ports, saying that the vessel Length overall is 300 metres, width is 48 metres and draught of 11.2 metres.
However, it could be noted that the vessel - ‘Maersk Stadelhorn’ is a flagship from Singapore, while the vessel sailed from Cotonou Port in Benin Republic to Onne Port in Nigeria.
Captain Marvin Omovbude, an Asst Harbour Master Onne Port, who led other Pilots – Ezra Yashiyi Yakubu and Abdulahi Sarki piloted the vessel to Onne Port Complex.
The Vessel arrived safely without any Security Challenges of any type, indicating that Security status of Onne Channel has improved tremendously and the Channel depth has also been improved and maintained to receive such large modern vessels.
Speaking to jubilating Port stakeholders who came to welcome the vessel, Captain Omovbude said NPA has recorded a milestone. He however, congratulated NPA MD for making this possible, saying that Onne Port is taking the lead in Ports Operations and efficiency among the Ports in African Sub-region.
It should be noted that Executive Management of Nigerian Ports Authority led by Hadiza Bala Usman has been implementing deliberate policies to promote the patronage of the Eastern Ports by given incentives and provision of Port facilities and dredging of the channel.
